Mobile voter registration exercise kicks off

The mobile voter registration exercise officially kicked off today (Monday) with many people visiting various mobile centres in the capital ahead of the expected harmonised elections.
After the release of US$8 million by treasury towards the voter registration exercise, the programme officially began in most parts of the country with many people replacing lost national identification cards and registering as voters.
The state media ZBC reports that some mobile centres in Harare showed that most people had widely received the exercise as it has become easier to acquire a national identification card rather than the long queues that normally characterise Market Square and Makombe Buildings.
"We are happy that we have been awarded the opportunity to acquire national identity cards. This will enable us to register as voters and participate in the electoral processes," said one man who registered as a voter.
Others commended government for the voter registration exercise, saying it provides them with an opportunity to participate in future electoral processes.
The Registrar General last week announced that the national mobile registration would commence in all provinces from Monday, April 29 to May 19, 2013.
The exercise will cover national identity registration, voter registration and inspection of the voters' roll.
Voter registration was supposed to have started on January 3, 2013 but failed to take off as treasury could not release the required funds, arguing that there were other budgetary demands.
