Aspiring Zanu-PF parliamentary and council candidates Saturday submitted their CVs and applications at party inter-district meetings countrywide.
The national election directorate had to extend the submission deadline beyond 4pm owing to the massive candidate turnout, the state controlled Sunday Mail reports.
In Bulawayo, retired Colonel Tshinga Dube lined up for Makokoba. Former Bulawayo Deputy Mayor David Ndlovu is contesting in the Nkulumane poll; Zanu-PF Central Committee member Godfrey Malaba in Pumula and Bulawayo Governor and Resident Minister Cain Mathema in Tsholotsho South.
Mathema will stand against Jabulani Nkomo, the son of late Vice-President and National Hero John Landa Nkomo.
Zanu-PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo apparently told the state media last night that the process ran smoothly.
He said the full list of candidates is expected to be unveiled after the provincial elections directorates meet today to consider applications. The provincial structure will, in turn, submit the names to the national elections directorate.
The primary elections will then be held on June 24.
"Everything went according to plan. There were no hiccups. It was a smooth process that saw the holding of inter-district meetings for aspiring candidates to submit their CVs and confirm their interest to participate in the elections," said Gumbo.
Zanu-PF National Chairman Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo said he instructed all provinces to extend submissions beyond the 4pm cut-off time owing to the massive turnout of candidates.
"The whole process has been smooth-sailing across the country except for a bit of constraints in terms of time because the submissions were supposed to have been submitted by 4pm.
"I had to instruct all provinces not to close because there were quite a number of aspiring candidates who were submitting their papers."
