MDC press statement on Workers' Day
01 May 2011 at 10:06hrs | Views
The Movement for Democratic Change joins the workers in Zimbabwe and around the world in celebrating the Workers Day. As a party born out of the coalitions of civil society and the Workers we remain committed to the struggle for the emancipation of workers.
The MDC believes that the struggle for the freedom of this country is tied together to the struggle of the freedom of the workers. We are thus disturbed that with our three decades of Independence the working class is still fighting for their rights.
We would like to make it known that as we write the new constitution, the rights of the workers are our priority. We are concerned that the workers salaries are still a mockery to the labour they put in the industry. The party is aware of the plight faced by the civil servants. We would like to make it known that we do sympathise with them and our representatives in the Inclusive Government are making frantic efforts to address their plight.
We are disturbed by some of our partners in the Inclusive Government who instead of addressing the difficulties faced by the companies which are facing closure mostly because of their failed economic policies, who are now busy threatening the existence of those companies that have tried to provide for the livelihood of the workers.
Whilst the MDC believes in the Economic Empowerment of the locals we believe that it should be done in a proper and transparent manner that will not affect negatively the welfare of the workers and scare away investments.
