A ZANU-PF supporter was murdered by unknown assailants in Chimanimani last week in a suspected politically-motivated attack.

Newman Munyamana of Doriyo Village under Chief Mutambara was on his way from a Zanu-PF election agents workshop when the incident occurred at around 5pm.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident during a meeting with the head of the African Union observer mission, General Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday.

She said the situation in Zimbabwe was peaceful and political parties were conducting their campaign rallies peacefully, without intimidation and police were providing security.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said there was freedom of movement, association, speech, while observers were on the ground.

"However it is unfortunate to note that police received a case of murder which we suspect was politically motivated. A Zanu-PF supporter, Newman Munyamana of Doriyo Village Chief Mutambara, Chimanimani in Manicaland province was murdered on his way home after attending a Zanu-PF workshop on July 26, 2013," Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She said police were still investigating the matter with a view to ascertaining what transpired.

Although the details were sketchy, Munyamana went to attend the workshop last Friday at around 6am at Chayamiti Business Centre and left at around 5pm.

He was seen the following day by a passer by lying dead along a footpath in Gandaufe Mountain and a report was made to the police.

Police attended the scene and found struggle marks around Munyamana's badly bruised body.

Munyamana's body was taken to Mutare General Hospital mortuary for post mortem.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba also briefed Mr Obasanjo about the recent arrest of the MDC-T deputy national chairman, Morgan Komichi.

"In our endeavour as the law enforcement agency to get to the bottom of the matter, we were left with no option except making him the prime suspect. Surprisingly, the leadership of the MDC-T party and the private media are questioning why police are investigating the matter," she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the force had the constitutional mandate to maintain law and order and they will continue arresting perpetrators of violence without fear or favour.

"On July 29 Morgan Komichi appeared before a court of law and was remanded in custody pending bail ruling today, the 30th of July 2013," Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She said the force was fully prepared and had the capacity to successfully police the elections.
