ZANU-PF Mashonaland West Province requires about US$10 million for the construction of a multi-purpose conference centre to accommodate delegates expected to converge on the province later this year for the party's annual people's conference.
At least two sites have been identified for the construction of the state-of-the-art conference centre.
Briefing the provincial co-ordinating committee recently, steering committee chairperson Webster Shamu said there was need to speed up the construction of the centre as it was being done from scratch.
"Our situation is a bit different from Midlands which hosted the conference last year in that they had part of the infrastructure, but we are starting from scratch," said Shamu.
"This calls on us to expedite the process of construction once all loose ends are tied up."
He said the design of the conference centre had since been completed, adding that the hectic election period had slightly affected the timelines for the completion of the project. Mashonaland West provincial chairman John Mafa said the province would ensure the project was complete before the conference in December.
"Although we are looking at alternative venues, should we fail to meet the deadline for completion of the project, we would like to see the conference centre built before the conference starts so that completion coincides with the conference," he said.
Mafa said even if the conference was not held in the new building, completion was imperative as it would be a heritage for the province.
