Zimbabweans should not look beyond the ruling Zanu-PF for social and economic transformation as the two MDC formations are now dead and buried after their drubbing during the July 31 harmonised elections, Zanu-PF secretary for Legal Affairs Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.
Mnangagwa, who is also the Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, said Zanu-PF was the party for the future, adding that Zimbabweans yearning for socio-economic development were supposed to pin their hopes on the revolutionary party.
He was addressing thousands of Zanu-PF supporters at Masunda Secondary School in Madamombe communal lands in Chivi over the weekend during celebrations hosted by Zanu-PF Politburo member and Minister of State for Psychomotor Activities in Education Josaya Hungwe, to thank the people for overwhelmingly voting for Zanu-PF and President Mugabe.
Mnangagwa paid tribute to the people for dumping the MDC formations into the "political dustbin".
"I want to urge all Zimbabweans to continue rallying behind Zanu-PF because it is a tried and tested party that has a clear idea on how to improve the lives of the people through the indigenisation and economic empowerment programme, among other policies," he said.
"Zanu-PF is the party for the future and the MDC formations are now dead and buried after their crushing defeat during the just-ended harmonised elections."
Mnangagwa said the MDC formations were not destroyed by war or violence, but by the people of Zimbabwe who overwhelmingly voted for Zanu-PF, a party that has a track record of enunciating pro-people policies. He challenged Zimbabweans to remain steadfast even in the face of challenges, saying it was important to jealously guard the country's heritage and natural resources.
"I want to urge you to continue supporting and rallying behind Zanu-PF because it is the only party that has a tradition of being on the side of the people always, since independence," said Mnangagwa.
"No matter how hard things might be, no matter how difficult the situation might be, we should continue to rally behind Zanu-PF because it is the only party that has interests of Zimbabweans at heart."
Mnangagwa said the new Zanu-PF Government would soon start the distribution of inputs such as seed and fertilisers to farmers nationwide ahead of the start of the rainy season.
He took a swipe at former Finance Minister in the inclusive Government, Tendai Biti, for availing inputs to farmers towards the end of the farming season in a bid to stifle the recovery of the agricultural sector.
Mnangagwa hailed the Zanu-PF leadership in Masvingo for ensuring a clean sweep of all the House of Assembly seats and restoring the province's acclaimed status as a one party state. Speaking while introducing Mnangagwa as the guest of honour, Zanu-PF
Politburo member and Energy and Power Development Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire described him as one of the faces of the liberation struggle with an impeccable track record in fighting against colonial domination.
Mavhaire said Mnangagwa was a rare breed of a freedom fighter who should be an inspiration to many, owing to his outstanding role during the liberation struggle from the days he survived on an age technicality after he was sentenced to death for bombing a Rhodesian train in the 1960s.
Mavhaire urged Zimbabweans to emulate the loyalty and dedication to duty of Mnangagwa, who continued to serve Zanu-PF and the nation after independence and achieved the feat of being one of a few cadres in the country who have served in Cabinet from Independence up to today.
Hungwe expressed gratitude to the people of Chivi and Masvingo at large for rallying behind Zanu-PF to ensure the revolutionary party and its leader President Mugabe cruised to a resounding victory in the July 31 polls that were held peacefully.
The elections were also endorsed by both local and international observers as free, fair, credible and representing the will of Zimbabweans. The celebrations were attended by senior Government officials from Masvingo, church leaders and chiefs.
