Zanu-PF polls - Update

The Zanu-PF provincial executive elections have kicked off in Matabeleland South province with voters trickling in at various polling stations to choose the party's provincial chairman.

The polling stations opened at 7am with about 1 736 voters.

The polls are expected to end at 7pm.

An assessment by ZBC shows that voting kicked off slowly in most of the polling stations that included Jaunda Primary, Gwanda High and Thornville Primary Schools in Gwanda Central.

The returning officer, Dr David Parirenyatwa expressed satisfaction with the start of the polls saying there are no hitches experienced so far.

Dr Parirenyatwa said the process is progressing smoothly with adequate polling officers and voting material having been disbursed to all the voting centres.

The incumbent provincial chairman, Andrew Langa is squaring it off with former chairman, Loyd Siyoka of Beitbridge and Phumuza Ndlovu of Bulilima.

Alice Dube and Washington Nkomo retained their posts as chairpersons of the women and the youth league after winning unopposed.

In Bulawayo Metropolitan province, long winding queues were observed as voting started peacefully this morning.

Meanwhile, voting for the Zanu PF provincial executive elections are going on well in Mashonaland East province.

Zanu PF Politburo member, Dr Obert Mpofu, who is the returning officer for the province, said he is satisfied with how things are going so far with all the stations having opened on time.

Dr Mpofu commended the party's provincial leadership which includes the national consultative assembly for having been cooperative during the process.

Dr Mpofu said he managed to meet candidates for the post of chairman and said they are all happy with how things have been moving with no animosity between them.

Incumbent chairman, Ray Kaukonde is being challenged by war veteran, Philemon Mutongi.

Results are expected to start trickling in, in the evening.
