A BULAWAYO man brutally assaulted his wife and their four-year-old son, smashed window panes of his house before allegedly committing suicide by hanging himself from a tree, following a domestic dispute.

However, the family of the man identified as Thamsanqa Ngwenya (31) of Entumbane says they suspect he was murdered.

Ngwenya's body was discovered yesterday around midnight hanging loosely from a tree.

"He was a tall man and the tree he was found hanging from was too short for us to agree that he commiteed suicide. He was actually kneeling with a bed sheet around his neck. He was murdered," said a family member who declined to be named.
Ngwenya's wife Thulisile Dube (28) said her husband arrived home on Saturday night and suddenly started assaulting her.

"He grabbed our son and pounded him against the wall and when I tried to restrain him that is when he turned on me and assaulted me."

She said she phoned Ngwenya's younger brother but when he arrived, Ngwenya became even more violent.

"He smashed window panes and almost hit our eight moth old daughter with a big stone," said Dube.

She said Ngwenya then left, threatening to sleep outside, but later came back during the night and started beating her again.

Dube said when her husband's younger brother intervened, Ngwenya left and she heard from police in the morning that he had been found dead.

His body was taken to hospital for a post mortem.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.

"I can confirm that a man from Entumbane, identified as Thamsanqa Ngwenya (48) allegedly hanged himself from a tree using a bed sheet and investigations are still underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident," he said.
