Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri has emphasised the need for discipline and professionalism among police officers for them to successfully support government's economic programmes.

Addressing officers at a ceremony to welcome returning officers from peace keeping missions in Liberia and South Sudan, Commissioner General Chihuri said it is imperative that police officers be loyal to the authorities.

Commissioner General Chihuri said Zimbabwe's socio economic blue-print, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZIM ASSET) requires participation of law enforcement agents to ensure a safe and conducive environment for its success.

"We always emphasise on numerous fora that as police we are an indivisible part of the Zimbabwean society. We are part of Zimbabwe and our work should thus be done with uttermost loyalty, commitment and patriotism. It is our critical responsibility to provide and sustain a safe and conducive environment for the success of this programme," he said.

Commissioner General Chihuri also took a swipe at western countries that use every opportunity to exploit resources of African nations.

He made the remarks after revelations by some returning officers from Liberia that the United States is looting resources such as oil from that country, leaving citizens in poverty.

"Why has America not developed Liberia, yet they are looting resources from that country? These are lessons which as a nation we must learn. Their aim is to loot our resources and nothing more," added Commissioner General Chihuri.

18 officers, comprising 11 males and seven females, returned from Liberia after successfully completing their peace keeping mission while five other members, comprising three males and two females, were deployed in South Sudan.

Among members of the contingents were notable faces that include Inspector Tigere Chigome from the traffic section and the Deputy Chaplin General, Superintendent Eunice Marima.
