A Budiriro 4 Zanu - PF cell chairman escaped death by a whisker when he was severely assaulted by a group of rowdy thugs suspected to be MDC-T supporters for wearing his party T-shirt at Budiriro 4 Shopping Centre at the weekend, the Herald reported.
Rodrick Dzapasi (44), who is cell chairman for Tabudirira District, sustained a deep cut on the head and a swollen leg after the assault.
He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where he was treated and discharged.
Efforts to get a comment from police spokesperson Chief Supritendant Paul Nyathi were fruitless as he was out of town. When the Herald visited Dzapasi at the party's Budiriro offices yesterday, he was clearly in pain.
Dzapasi confirmed he was attacked by a group of MDC-T supporters who were mobilising people for their rally which was held yesterday at OK Shopping Centre in Budiriro 5A.
The rally was addressed by MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.
"I was standing at Budiriro 4 Shopping Centre when a group of MDC-T supporters arrived at the shops singing and chanting their party slogans.
"One of them approached me and started asking why I was putting on a Zanu-PF T-shirt before asking me to remove it and I refused. He suddenly struck me with an iron bar on the head. I was surprised to wake up at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals," Dzapasi said.
