The Chinese People's Liberation Army has signed a $4.8 million grant agreement with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, pledging to support the local military in its quest to defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The pledge was made by the visiting Deputy Chief General Staff from the PLA, Lieutenant General Qi Jianguo.

Lt. Gen Qi paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Defence, Sydney Sekeramayi, to exchange notes on ways of strengthening the cordial relations.

He said the PLA stands ready to assist the ZDF in its quest to defend the country's sovereignty.

Dr Sekeramayi commended the People's Liberation Army for assisting the Zimbabwe Defence Forces through technical and financial assistance.

"We are grateful of the support which we continue to enjoy from the Asian country. We have agreed to work together in strengthening the military relations," he said.

China and Zimbabwe enjoy cordial relations in various sectors of the economy.

China was instrumental in the setting up of the National Defence College having extended an interest free loan of $98 million to the country.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army was established in August 1927 and is one of the world's largest military forces in terms of personnel.
