The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) report that 25 people died in 124 road accidents that occurred on Monday as at 0900hrs countrywide as the country commemorates Heroes and Defence Forces days.
ZRP national spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, however, said this year had recorded a decline compared to the same period last year which had recorded 132 accidents with 26 deaths.
Also, 69 people were injured compared to 131 in 2013.
Harare led with five deaths followed by Bulawayo and Masvingo which reported four while Mashonaland East and Central followed with three deaths each.
Mashonaland Central and the Midlands reported two deaths each while Matabeleland North and South reported a death each.
No deaths were reported form Manicaland.
Nyathi told The Zimbabwe Mail that it was a matter of concern that most of the accidents were occurring during the night.
"We still have challenges with drivers who drive recklessly at night, thereby putting other people's lives at risk."
He said police also impounded 152 defective vehicles while 8 287 tickets were issued to drivers found on the wrong side of the law.
Meanwhile, Nyathi said a decline in the number of accidents could be attributed to extensive educational campaigns by the police, Ministry of Transport, as well as by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
