President Robert Mugabe has lashed out at party bigwigs who splashed cash to lure electorates at the just ended Zanu-PF youth league congress to vote for their preferred candidates, describing them as "rubbish!"
Mugabe, officially closing the youth league indaba early Sunday morning said he was aware of vote-buying antics employed by some senior party members with an aim to influence the outcome of the elections for the youths league executive.
"Kumusoro kwedu kune vakuru vanetsika iyoyo yeku tsvaka mari yekuti vadiwe nevanhu (At the top leadership we have some people with such tendencies of dishing out money so they may be liked by people), its rubbish!" Mugabe said.
The youth league's sixth congress held in the capital saw the election of Kudzai Chipanga of Manicaland to the post of deputy youth chair after trouncing Tongai Kasukuwere of Mashonaland Central.
"Yes you fought, yes you won, those in leadership, yes you won. I know there have been hitches, ndinoziva zvangu kuti vakuru vamwe vakamboedza vakati pano ne pano (I know that some old people tried here and there) with some monies and some goods, vachiti hativaone (pretending as if we did not see them). Get away from the youths," Mugabe said.
Chipanga won the post after conducting a countrywide campaign with assistance of Zanu-PF secretary for administration, Didymus Mutasa, who travelled with him to a number of provinces.
Kasukuwere, on the other hand, unveiled his candidature for the youth league top electable post four days before the conference after the national election directorate had disqualified Gokwe-Nembudziya (Midlands) MP, Justice Mayor Wadyajena from contesting because he had not spent more than five years in the provincial structures of the party.
The midlands team tried to second Luis Matutu to challenge the post but they later opted to support Kasukuwere.
Mugabe said if those who had won the elections did so using money, they were rubbish and not worth to be youth league leaders.
"If you allowed some people to buy you, and if you voted because someone has given you cash to vote for them, you are rubbish!" he said.
"You are just rubbish in front of me and the party. Even the person who gave you the money is rubbish. Both of you are rubbish. You are just rubbish as the money used. The giver and the given, you are rubbish," he fumed.
He said youths must guard against being "made puppets" by senior Zanu-PF politicians adding that, "you are not political prostitutes".
The elections were also marred by age-cheating allegations, with Kasukuwere claiming some people who voted from Manicaland could be way above 35 which is the cut off age for eligible voters.
