Zimbabweans are not interested in another Government of National Unity between opposition parties and ZANU PF, a Bulawayo24 survey can reveal.
In a random survey targeting people from all the provinces of the country, a 70% majority of respondents said that they are not interested in another GNU while 25% were in favour of the shared governance and the other 5% said they didn't care. Of the 70% that are not for another GNU, 90% of them say they don't want the GNU in order for the economy to prove the inefficiencies of the ruling ZANU PF. Only 10% of them said they don't want to share governance in order for ZANU PF to prove that it can indeed turn around the fortunes of the country through its economic blue print ZIMASSET.
Of the 30% in favour of the GNU, almost all of them at 95% want the GNU as they believe that the involvement of the opposition "which has links with western countries" will bring in the much needed Foreign Direct Investment and turn around the economic situation in the country. The other 5% just want the GNU for purposes of instilling political stability in the country and not necessarily for economic transformation.
In the comments provided against a second GNU, a number of respondents claimed that the GNU of 2009 "resuscitated" a dying ZANU PF as the opposition came in and rescued the economy which ZANU PF had destroyed and had led to people voting against it in 2008. According to the respondents the current economic situation must be allowed to deteriorate so that ZANU PF's failures can be exposed.
"No to another GNU, we can not keep providing ZANU PF with rescue packages. They rigged the elections not knowing that they can not rig the economy let them fail and die peacefully," reads one comment.
Another responded from Matabeleland North, said that ZANU PF is already in a Government of National Unity with PF ZAPU and they always boast about it and so there is no need for another unity.
"How many unifications should one country have? Should there always be unity when ZANU PF begins failing? They are already in a GNU so let them be and fail," reads the over 50 year old man's submission.
Those that are favouring another GNU claim that they want the GNU for the benefit of the ordinary Zimbabwean who is suffering because of the economic failures of the ruling party. Others believe that a second GNU will lead to the removal of targeted sanctions imposed on the country as the opposition "is friends with the sanctioning countries and can easily negotiate for the sanctions to be removed," according to a comment.
"We need another GNU as it is us in the grass root who are suffering the economic failures of government not the leaders at the top who are affording anything they want," says one comment.
In a surprise revelation the majority of people that are calling for another GNU are from the Matabeleland regions while the entire Manicaland Province is completely against another GNU. 4 of the 5 respondents from based in the diaspora were also against another GNU, 1 was neither for or against the GNU.
On political parties affiliation analysis, an also shocking 50% of those that claimed to be sympathetic with ZANU PF favoured a second GNU while 80% of those who claimed to be MDC T were against another GNU. 100% of those who claimed to be part of the MDC T Renewal project all favoured a second GNU. 90% of those who claimed to be aligned to the Welshman Ncube led MDC also lobbied against another GNU while 100% of those claiming to be Dumiso Dabengwa's led ZAPU or other parties also voted against another GNU.
A total of 108 people were involved in this survey with the majority of them all based in Zimbabwe and from all of the country's ten provinces.
Bulawayo24 continues to make monthly surveys on the Zimbabwean political and social situation and anyone interested in being part of the surveys is free to drop in their e - mail address via the Bulawayo 24 whatsapp platform on +44 7706 128821 stating their age, gender and province they are based in or diaspora if outside the country.
A few dozens of young Zimbabweans mostly from the MDC T have been undertaking sporadic demonstration in Harare demanding for jobs that ZANU PF promised in their election manifesto, this month the survey will be focusing on the ZANU PF 2013 election Manifesto, ZIMASSET and the current economic down turn. ZANU PF still has four more years of its mandate to run the country, are there any chances that ZANU PF will in the four years remaining be able to turn around the economy of the country as per their manifesto and economic blue print? Let us get your view.
