Congress update 6 December 2014

1000: Delegates are flocking in for the 5th day of the Zanu-PF congress. Among them are Simbaneuta Mudarikwa, Sydney Sekeramayi, Biggie Matiza, David Chapfika, Angeline Masuku, Ignatius Chombo, Goodwills Masimirembwa and Timothy Stamps. Situation is calm as jingles praising President Robert Mugabe are being played in the background.

1010: Master of ceremony chants anti-Mujuru slogans that generate wild cheers from the delegates who have gathered so far. He chants "Pasi naJoice Mujuru! Pasi negamatox!" Joseph Chinotimba, Paddy Zhanda and Oliver Mandipaka arrive.

1040: Chinotimba takes to the stage with anti-Mujuru jokes that are met with loud applause from the delegates. Cephas Msipa arrives amid slogans denigrating Mujuru as the MC urges delegates to chant the slogans in unison. Josiah Hungwe arrives as well.

1145: Delegates are pouring in in big numbers as they anticipate Mugabe's arrival.

1150: War vets leader, Chris Mutsvangwa, arrives, and Dzikamai Mavhaire follows. Mugabe has not yet arrived

1227: Singer and war vet, Cde Chinx, ignores calls for him to leave the stage as he sings "Hondo yeMinda"

1230: The congress venue is now almost filled to capacity

1232: Mavhaire, who is also the energy minister, is booed by a section of the crowd which is complaining about power shortages. The crowd loudly urges Mugabe to sort things out at ZESA.

1250; Mnangagwa, Khaya Moyo arrive as people whisper they are going to be named the next co-vice presidents.

1252: Khaya Moyo addresses delegates and heaps praises on the Mugabe familiy; denounces MDC-T and sanctions. Announces that Mugabe and First Lady about to arrive adding delays were due to consultations that were taking place. Tells crowd he is going to request First Family to come in

1300: Mugabe arrives with Grace beside him. Edna Madzongwe and Jacob Mudenda are in their company. Some delegates speculate the two are, in fact, the next two VPs

1302: SK asks presenters to make their thematic recommendations. Mudenda steps forward to present the state of the party address

1308: Mudenda says his thematic committee endorsed Mugabe and Grace as president and secretary for women's affairs, respectively. Says Mugabe must expel all members fingered in factionalism to cheers from the crowd.

Mudenda adds those to be appointed to parastatals will be vetted by party first. Says party welcomes dialogue with Britain to end hostilities. Also says elevation of party members must be based on loyalty

1320: Agric minister, Joseph Made, takes over for the food security thematic committee. Says govt must timely pay farmers for delivered produce and urges transparent distribution of inputs. Committee calls for policies that promote agriculture and incentives to grow food crops as well measures to control influx of GMO products

1330: Sithembiso Nyoni steps up for the social services thematic committee: Govt must prioritise social services delivery and social protection, introduce feeding schemes in marginalised communities and align laws to new constitution.

1341: Mpofu (infrastructure and utilities) takes over and immediately denounces Mujuru and her faction in a slogan. Admits infrastructure is dilapidated and needs a revamp. Says: govt must prioritise expansion of Masvingo-Beitbridge road; govt must promote use of alternative sources of energy; NRZ and Airzim must be recapitalised; potholes on highways will be filled before Christmas;

1350: Walter Chidakwa takes over for the value addition cluster: Artisanal mining must be mainstreamed; govt needs friendly policies to attract local and foreign investment; need for prohibitive tariffs on goods that can be produced locally; Mugabe must be hailed for his position on value addition and beneficiation

1401: Douglas Mombeshora presents for the indigenisation and land reform cluster: Govt must dissolve national indigenisation board and the Zimbabwe Youth Council and reconstitute them with party cadres' communal farmers affected by development projects must get compensation; the one family-one farm principle must be respected; sub-letting of farms must be prohibited

1410: Oppah Muchinguri is gets wild applause as she presents women's affairs: League endorses Mugabe and Grace (to wild cheers);

Pays tribute to Mugabe for supporting women empowerment and implores the party to deal with factionalism; men must not interfere with women's affairs; remove duty on sanitary wear;

1507: Mnangagwa takes to the podium to present the party's constitutional amendments: Says president to appoint two VPs in accordance with the Unity Accord; National Chair to be appointed by Mugabe; members who fail to carry out their duties diligently will be punished ; disloyal members will be dealt with accordingly

1527: Mnangagwa called to the podium to move Mugabe's election as party president

1529: Oppah takes to the podium and seconds the motion

1530: Chatunga Mugabe goes to sit among delegates. Mugabe endorsed by acclamation and crowd bursts into song. Delegates take to the dance floor and even the area reserved for journalists is invaded.

1600: Mugabe chronicles history of colonialism and declares that Zimbabwe will never be a colony again. He says he received a call from Didymus Mutasa in the morning saying he and his wife were ill. Goes on to say anyone is free to contest him for as long as they don't plot coups

1640: Mugabe dissolves the central committee amid wild cheers as congress awaits new one

1650: Mugabe finishes making his speech, outlining how central committee members are chosen.

1651: Mugabe asked to endorse Grace's nomination, which he does and delegates confirm . Grace comes to the podium to give her speech

1659: Grace thanks delegates for endorsing her and takes a swipe at Mujuru for opposing her nomination. Accuses Mujuru of de-campaigning her. Says Mujuru war credentials are not an excuse for being corrupt and divisive. She castigates MPs who were part of the Bhora Musango campaign in 2008. Describes Mujuru as the aggressor and is therefore facing the consequences of what she started. Claims she intended to resolve matters publicly but was irked when Mujuru went public against her nomination.
