Don't be like Mujuru says Mugabe

The following are excerpts of President Mugabe's remarks as he closed the historic Zanu-PF 6th National People's Congress in Harare yesterday.

I want to begin by expressing to you all my thanks and gratitude for the way you have conducted this Congress.

I know there might have been the physical side, but well, we have to accommodate so many people, the comfort that we create may not be really up the standards and therefore instead of comfort we create this standard that I know that people put up with a great degree discomfort.

If the purpose they would have come for is to them so great, so dear and so important as to make them feel whatever those aspects of discomfort might have been, you don't feel them because your mind is set on fulfilling the work for which you came.

We have not heard much by way of complaints, I hope you have been eating enough. I hope the food you have been eating was clean and healthy food and hamuende mune manyoka zvatatichimboita then.

But it's a brilliant occasion for you also to familiarise yourself with the environment. For some perhaps it's rarely that they visit Harare; some who come from as far afield as Beitbridge and so on, the nearest towns to them would be Gwanda, Bulawayo etcetera and so Harare is far-fetched.

I want to thank you for the dedication and commitment you showed, the discussions went well in the groups that were set up to discuss the various items, the breakup of the entire large concept of Zim-Asset and we thank you for that contribution.

But many of you, of course, came with certain grievances arising from how things had not gone so well in your provinces and also arising from, in fact, the situation within the party as a whole which was a little bit sad because a group within us was planning to undertake a destructive operation; and that much has disturbed many.

Having come and having listened to us, I'm sure you will go back comforted that that problem has been handled and handled properly and the party is very safe, the leaders are safe and I hope all of you to also have that sense of security.

We have come, we have listened to some of you. Your duty now is to go back and inform others what experiences you have had, you have had gone through in Harare, what really has happened here, the end of our five-year period, the turn of life we did to our Central Committee.

We have a new Central Committee and the Central Committee is a creature of your own contributions, your own inputs.

In the various provinces you chose the people you thought were the right ones to take the membership of the Central Committee. We have not rejected anyone, we have taken them all because know they are the people you liked, they are people you wanted to see in the Central Committee.

You have been fortunate enough to come to interact with us, fortunate enough to interact with others from various other provinces and that's an experience that is very valuable.

We remain friends, that's important; hearing the views of others and listening to the presentations made and from those of us in the leadership, and that's what we have experienced.

We also learn a lot from interacting. It's very healthy interacting. We get to know your views, we get to know what you think and also even to be very free just as you become free with us; that's the experience, that's the social aspect - a very important aspect that binds us.

The leaders are not leaders unto themselves; they are people's leaders. They lead the people and get to know their needs.

You must satisfy the needs. Is it hunger, is it education, is it health, poverty at home, to be uplifted? And all these we put together, we try to put together in Government through the ministries to serve you along those facets for the love of the entire population. We are not always able to fulfil your desires, to give you things that satisfy you. We desire to do it.

That's what we came here for as we want to get over the problems. The problems of hunger, development.

We know we can't satisfy them (civil servants) in terms of salaries and conditions they are living in, but these, yes we discuss.

There are countries like France vanonzi all the diamonds which are underground - Gabon or any other - belong to France. Ndozviripo izvozvi nemuAfrica.

I have told you this before that's why we cannot get free and unite solidly. That's why other countries say "ah Zimbabwe, Mugabe anopenga".

Honayi we have the land, the farmers have the land then you say, "Ah they are bad farmers."

Let them be bad farmers, we will teach them how to be good farmers.

But the land is theirs, the forests are theirs, the soil theirs, the rivers theirs, the minerals theirs. The birds of the air, the animals of the forest, they are yours. Even the snakes, the lizards they belong to you. That is what God has given us. Those are our neighbours aren't they?

The problems starts manheru dzinenge dzorira zvimadatya.

There is snake in our house. So the snake in the house, the British were the snake in the house. Tell the British that we welcome them here as friends although they imposed sanctions on us but we say these people are foolish.

Havazive kuti husahwira hunoitwa sei.

Our country - lovely climate. We may have droughts, yes. But when you go to that little island, I don't know.

I don't think I could ever establish a home in an environment of that nature. Because the country is small the people are also small minded.

Ana Blair that's very small thinking, semunhu asina ndangariro. Benzi iri. Tabvumirana naThatcher land must come to the people, Thatcher said yes and that programme of land reform began.

But then comes Blair, I had not heard about him at all. The Labour party had had real statesmen before but this man came from the streets - young man ka.

Munofanhira kufunda kuti maturity is necessary before you can actually get into power. Look at how ana Blair led Britain. Aka kanomhanyira hondo, kakuti uko kuIraq naBush. Ako kakuti shamwari yaGaddafi. Gaddafi wo, benzi. Takamuudza tamuudza kuti havasi vanhu ava. Ungavingwe naBlair achiti ndavashamwari? Iwe wobva wati ehe, then you open yourself for the British to send their intelligence saying they want to help you. Help me?

They want to assess the strength of your army to get the vantage points kuti ndekupi kune maforces and so on, to know everything about you. That's the British.

And so what do they do? Vanongomutsa kagroup kakati "oh no we are oppressed". Kadaro kagroup zvikanzi "ah Gaddafi akarwisa kagroup kacho". Zvikanzi "ah wakuuraya vana nevakadzi nemacivilians".

Ndomhosva yakayenda kuUnited Nations izvozvo zvekuuraya macivilians in a war hazvibvumwe.

Apo varangana nevarungu kuti mugosupporta kuti tipihwe vote. Vanhu veduwo foolishly and it was South Africa, Nigeria and Gabon vakanga vakanga vakamirira Africa vobva vafungawo kuti hongu ichokwadi chekuti Gaddafi arikuuraya vanhu.

That's why we say take care.

We distributed land and gave many of us land and here we hear stories that the white farmers are coming back, coming back and pretending to be your friends, giving you a bit of money and offering to farm that land for you. No, no, no.

Don't get us to be a colony again. The settlers who were here before caused us much suffering, sent us into prison, detained and restricted us, killed lots of our people vachivaisa muma mass graves.

They even went across the border to kill our people in refugee camps, merciless people. We have not been vindictive.

I say then, Zimbabwe is for us all.

Today, because we are independent, and each and every one who is Zimbabwean is independent and we cannot avoid each other, so the only way is for us to work together and for us the majority of the people that is the message.

As long as the opposition parties organise themselves in a peaceful way we don't touch them, vanoita zvemahumbwe zvavo zvavanoita ikoko vanaTsvangirai, nehuhure hwavo ndezvavo izvo.

Tingangoseka Tsvangirai tichiti ane huhure; tinahwowo. Huzere meduwo muno, ndozvimwe zvirikutikuvadza izvozvo.

That's bad morals, extremely bad morals and quite a great number of people in our former Central Committee, former Politburo, were rotten morally.

Wabata mukadzi uyu waenda kune uyo, wabata uyu - zvino ungavapedze? But of course havazosvika pana Tsvangirai uyo akatemerwa nyora, nyora dzacho uyo, yeah.

Alright, now we will set up the Politburo next week. Hatingambozviite mauro ano, mazita acho handisati ndamboona kuti province iyi yatipa mazita anani, ndavanani vatingatore kuisa muPolitburo, so I don't want to rush you, so be patient.

But mid-next week, by Wednesday or Thursday, we will make an announcement. We will let you know because we cannot go far. We will have to chose the two Vice-Presidents and the Chairman and the secretary, one who is in charge of our secretariat, basa ranga richiitwa na vaMutasa.

Sure, we have a lot of our young men and experienced young men but young men are young men of course, we would want them also to learn.

But now the new constitution says only the heads of departments will constitute the Politburo, only heads and not deputies; so deputies are out, deputies will still remain in the Central Committee.

But they will be briefed by their heads, so we don't know whether you in the Central Committee will be lucky enough.

But we will do a reshuffle, there will be disappointment but we will try to be as objective as possible and we will try to avoid zvemafactions and vamwe vakanga vachishanda mumafactions.

Someone sent us a written sentence achiti kuMarondera tadzorera vanhu VaKaukonde. Ko Marondera, ndimi makatipa ka vanhu ava, endai mugare pasi ku Marondera monosarudza vamunofunga kuti ava ndovakanaka.

Kana muchiti vatakapiwhwa vachinzi ndivo ndovakasarudzwa neMashonaland East provincial executive council, kana muchiti aiwa havasi venyu, fine, tinokwanisa kukutumirai vatungamiri vanoterera, but apa hatiite izvozvo, we will do your will asi hatidi kuti tinzi ndimi makanganisa, ndovanhu vakanzi vakabva kuMash East province.

Kana kuchine controversy ensure you sit down. We are prepared that you redo the exercise. Kaukonde wakatizira kuSouth Africa, he is no longer there and I will not want to see anyone interfering with you, mogara pasi moga.

Kana musingade ivava vatinavo motirakidza kuti magara pasi, muine marepresentative vanobva kuma Districts, vakanaka naka, vamusina kupiwa asi vanenge vasarudzwa ikoko.

Moti imi chakakanganiswa ndechichi nechichi, alright, ndimi mega mune chichemo ichocho, hatina kuchinzwa kune vamwe.

Asika zvinenge zvichida kukurumidzwa nekuti sezvandakuudzaika tiri kusarudza vanhu varikuenda mu politburo, so we will look at it as quickly as possible nevakuru venyu tione zvamuri kuchema nazvo.

I want to thank you, eh nguva yaenda mangwana tine rufu, tine gamba redu ratiri kuviga VaKotsho Dube vakashaya, he worked with us, he was on the Zapu side.

He worked with us for a long time, organisationally, and even much later, takazovaita ambassador, and very much later vatoita retire takati come back and we assigned him again ivo va Kotsho Dube nevamwewo, kuti dzokerai kubasa taona manga makangogara chete.

We wanted to give them a bit of life, retiring actually sends one to the grave much quicker.

I want to say once again, thank you congratulations kunemi mose, mose ku Women's League, Youth League and members of the Central Committee.

I am there for as long as I still have some brains in me, and I thank God for having given me extra strength. I work as hard as possible.

For as long as I am still sane and still bright in mind and I think I still have a good memory and very good catchment area in my mind, I still have willpower, I know.

I know our history much more than you do, I know the suffering our people have had more than you do, I know the wishes of all those heroes who lie at the Heroes Acre and others who lie elsewhere more than you do.

I also know the wishes of many, some of who are dead, a few and most of the present ones the younger ones who are still alive, who want to work for the people, who want to work for everyone of our people, and I wish you well everyone of you, go well.

And I would want to warn all those in the Central Committee that if you are going to be chosen to go into Politburo, drop the nonsense about these are my people, these are my poeple.

They are all our people.

Hapana asiri munhu wedu muparty muno. Munyika, yes, you might have your family, and hapana anokurambidza kuti uti iyi imhuri yangu kana kuti ndinobva kwakati kasi kana taapakushandira nyika, tichishandira musangano, tirikushandira vanhu vedu vose.

Hatina rusarura rwekuti ava ndivo vangu, ava ndivo vako, aiwa, vauri kuti vako muparty unenge uchiti vaende kupi.

I want them to learn from the example we have had, the lesson we have had, iyoyi yatiparadzanisa nana Mai Mujuru.

Hatidi kuzvinzwa izvozvo, hatidi, I don't want to listen to any nonsense at all.

Pamberi neZanu-PF! Pamberi nekubatana! Pamberi nekugona! Pamberi neChimurenga!

Unity begins with me, unity begins with you unity begins with all of us. Peace begins with me, peace begins with you, peace begins with all of us!
