Vice President Pelekhezela Mphoko says his new position presents him a huge challenge to follow the footsteps of giants such as the late John Landa Nkomo and Father Zimbabwe Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo.
Mphoko says he wouild do his utmost best to maintain or surpass the pace set by his predecessors in the capacity of vice president.
Besides attending to the major economic issues facing Zimbabwe, Vice President Mphoko faces the daunting task of maintaining the legacy of unity among Zimbabweans and stressing the need to continue the process of national healing.
ZBC took the opportunity to ask Mphoko who he is and what role he played in the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe, to which he only had a few words.
"Falling trees make a lot of noise but a standing tree is silent. Those who shared the trenches with me from back in the 1960s know me, from Zanu, Zapu, ANC of South Africa, MPLA of Angola, FRELIMO...Tanzania, you name it," he said.
Mphoko together with Emmerson Mnangagwa were elevated during the recent 6th Zanu-PF National People's Congress which also saw the sacking of former Vice President Joice Mujuru and her clique.
A short perusal of his CV showed that the newly appointed vice president has a long and proven track record of participation in the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe from the days of the National Democratic Party in the 60s through to Zapu and to the Soviet Union for military training.
His role as military instructor in the struggle, his participation in reconnaissance mission from Katima Mlilo on the border with Zambia up to Mozambique and his commander roles in various operations, including in the then Sipolilo, is well documented.
He is associated with figures such as Joe Modise of ANC, Chris Hani, Charles Ngwenya and other heroes of the struggle like Herbert Chitepo, Ackim Ndlovu, JZ Moyo, Kumbirai Kangai, Josiah Tongogara, George Silundika Joseph Msika and other towering sons and daughters of the soil.
