Dangamvura-Chikanga constituency by-election losing independent candidate Kuziwa Maundike has mocked the warring faction riddled Zanu-PF as "finished" following its exhibition of fear even of "individuals" in the just-ended polls.
Maundike who polled 707 votes ahead of NCA's Ruramai Musiiwa during the June 10, by-election which was won by Esau Mupfumi who polled 6 376 votes, also tore into MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai for believing that Zanu-PF would be willing to make electoral reforms.
In an interview with the Daily News early this week, Maundike said Zanu-PF showed absolutely no confidence in itself even in the absence of its fiercest rival MDC.
"Zanu-PF is finished! It's in disarray! It was so scared even of lowly individuals like us. We thought in the absence of the MDC they would muster some confidence to have a free and fair election but alas they continued to intimidate voters and went into over drive in a vote buying spree," Maundike said.
The former police officer, however, admitted to having legitimised what he regarded as a "sham election" by his participation, chiding Tsvangirai for weakening his case for electoral reforms by handing Zanu-PF total control of Parliament.
"We indeed legitimised this sham process but our reasoning is that Zanu-PF, as long as they are in power, will never make conditions that will have them voted out. The moment they do that they will be booted out!
"Tsvangirai even made the situation worse by firing his rebels which he then gave to Zanu-PF on a silver platter by de-campaigning opposition forces that had offered to take on Zanu-PF," Maundike said.
He said in the current state Zanu-PF can even change the constitution.
"It's truly myopic that he (Tsvangirai) wants a democratic space to be availed to him when the opposition voice has absolutely no say in parliament. They can now even re-write the constitution," Maundike said.
