Opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume of the Transform Zimbabwe says the ruling Zanu PF government should relinguish power because it has failed to provide food for its people.

Ngarivhume told VOA Studio 7 all the country's provinces are facing serious food shortages with some children already dropping out of school due to hunger.

On Saturday, the Southern Eye quoted Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa as telling the people of Matabeleland South that the government is facing serious challenges in securing food for the over 600,000 people desperately in need of food aid.

Ngarivhume said the reality on the ground is dire.

"It's a clear sign of leadership failure," said Ngarivhume, adding that "the government should have ... forecast that there is going to be drought and then put mitigation measures in place."

He said the government has not done that for more than 35 years.

Mnangagwa was quoted as saying his government has secured 50,000 metric tonnes of maize from Zambia and so far 16,000 metric tonnes is already in Bulawayo silos.
