Zanu-PF G40 goes for broke
22 Oct 2015 at 09:44hrs | Views
The Zanu-PF faction known as the G40 is plotting to push for a constitutional amendment to re-introduce a clause that would compel the revolutionary party to have a woman in the presidium in what could be a game changer in the race to succeed President Robert Mugabe.
After campaigning for the ouster of Joice Mujuru last year, they now want Zanu-PF to respond to the current gender imbalances by either catapulting a woman to the party's national chairmanship or even relegate one of the VPs to make way for a woman.
In 2004, Zanu-PF had to resort to the quota system to accommodate Mujuru, who was later booted out of the party ahead of last year's congress.
The quota system was conveniently abandoned to allow VP Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed Mujuru.
The G40 appear to have support of the Youth League and the Women's League, although the First Lady, Grace Mugabe, is still to be presented with the proposals.
