Gangarahwe wins Mhondoro-Mubaira primaries

George Gangarahwe has won the ticket to represent Zanu-PF in the Mhondoro-Mubaira parliamentary by-election after beating four other challengers in the party's primary election held this Sunday.
Gangarahwe polled 1 411 votes while his closest rival Kenias Shamuyarira polled 1 321 votes with Nyarai Chasi coming third after garnering 987 ballots.
Other candidates who contested the primary poll are Elison Simbanegavi and Alexio Mutyambizi got 548 votes and 426 votes respectively.
A total of 4 923 votes were cast, of which 4 693 were valid.
The returning officer Tabetha Kanengoni Malinga announced the results and told the losing candidates to bear in mind that the election was part of an internal democratic process which allows members of the party to elect a candidate of their choice.
Winning candidate Gangarahwe paid tribute to the ruling party members in the constituency for showing confidence in him and pledged to support youth empowerment projects in Mhondoro-Mubaira, while Zanu-PF chairman for Mashonaland West Ephraim Chengeta expressed gratitude to the voters for casting their ballots in a peaceful manner.
One of the losing candidates Kenias Shamuyarira who has now lost in the second consecutive primary election, said Sunday's election result be should be reflected in the 2018 harmonised election.
The Mhondoro-Mubaira parliamentary seat fell vacant following the expulsion from Zanu-PF and the subsequent recall from parliament of Mr Sylvester Nguni for being part of the Mujuru cabal.
