Hoards of Zanu-PF officials took to Twitter in celebration after President Robert Mugabe's daughter and husband Simba Chikore welcomed their first child.

Leading the tributes to the new so-called "Royal Baby" was Zanu-PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere who used his speech at a football stadium in the capital, Harare, to mark 36 years of independence, that he was excited to see the arrival of the new son.

"Makorokoto Gushungo nechipo chemuzukuru chamapihwa (Congratulations ...Mugabe on this gift of a grandson)," Kasukuwere gushed.

Highfield West Zanu-PF MP Psychology Maziwisa took a guess at what the baby may be called, suggesting: "#RoyalBaby"

"Congratulations to Bona and Simba Chikore on the birth of their baby boy," Maziwisa said.

"I'm absolutely delighted for them. Wishing them lots of excitement, happiness, and hopefully some sleep! This is great news indeed and an exciting moment, not only for them but for the entire nation."

Bona, who is Mugabe's first child with his second wife Grace, was said to be "doing well" after giving birth in the Far East to the little boy, according to an address by Public Service minister Prisca Mupfumira at a Zanu-PF Makonde inter-district meeting at Chinhoyi training centre last weekend.

This means Mugabe becomes a grandfather at a ripe age of 92 for the first time.

The First Lady Grace Mugabe was present for the birth. Mugabe has already been informed that the baby is a boy, as have Simba's parents.

"Let me inform the house that Gushungo vave nemuzukuru, kwakazvarwa mwana mukomana (now has a grandson, he was blessed with a grandson)," Mupfumira is quoted.

The mainstream opposition MDC expressed their well wishes but said the president's daughter should have given birth here.

"We would like to wish Bona and her husband and their families hearty congratulations on the birth of their child," MDC spokesman Obert Gutu said.

"It would have been even more exciting and fulfilling had the baby been born in Zimbabwe and not in some far away country in the Far East.

"We also hope and trust that the birth of his grandson will spur ...Mugabe to want to go on retirement immediately. The old man needs to rest."

Tendai Biti's opposition PDP congratulated the Mugabes for their first grandchild "and we wish him many years to come and hope both the mother and the child are in good health".

"We understand that he has been born with the potential of dual citizenship in a cosmopolitan world," PDP spokesman Jacob Mafume said.

"We hope that the president, as the chief executive of the county, now understands that it is imperative that they improve the country's health facilities. It is unheard of in well managed countries for the people to want to give child birth in other countries.

"As such, on this happy occasion, we repeat and echo the message that the president must retire for the sake of his children and grandchildren if not for the nation."
