Government is not banning social  media anytime soon, information and Technology Minister Supa Mandiwanzira has said.

Speaking in an interview with Star FM on Monday, Mandiwanzira said, "We have no intention to regulate social media and we will not be consulting people about things we don't want to do, but if the need arises that we must regulate social media, trust me we will ask you, we will ask Zimbabweans how they think we should protect them."

However, on Saturday Cabinet Minister Abednico Ncube instructed Zanu PF members to stop using social media platforms saying they are Western tools.

Last year, president Robert Mugabe also told Zanu-PF members to stay away from social media.

Mandiwanzira claimed that, "people who want this Government to look terrible, who want the Ministry to look like it doesn't know what it is doing; please forgive us we don't have that intention".

Two weeks ago, there was a countrywide jam of social media platforms during protests.
