The MDC led by WElshman Ncube has condemned the arrest of 15 human rights activists in Africa Unity Square while taking part in the 16 day protest against the mismanagement of the economy by the Zanu PF government in Harare at the weekend.
In a statement the arrests are a blatant contempt of the national constitution which accords every citizen the right to petition or engage in peaceful demonstration.
"We view these arrests as part of the security forces' systematic crack down on the Zanu PF government's critics in order to silence and intimidate any voices that speak up against the incompetent regime," reads the statement.
"We demand the unconditional release of the activists as they were simply exercising their freedom of expression and assembly. These arbitrary arrests and intimidation of activists protesting against the governance incompetence of the Zanu PF regime needs to stop forthwith if we are to be taken seriously as a nation."
