MDC PRESS SATEMENT ON WOMEN'S DAY 2012

The Movement for Democratic Change led by Professor Welshman Ncube joins the nation and the world in commemorating the World International Women's Day, whose theme this year is; "Empower Rural Women â€" End Hunger and Poverty."

On this day the MDC Women's Assembly takes time to recognize the contribution of Zimbabwean women in the struggle for our freedom, from the days of the liberation struggle to the present fight for the democratization of our state. We salute these women for their record sacrifice. They will always remain an inspiration to us.

As a party we remain concerned that in all these struggles, the rural women remain the most adversely affected even during this course of transforming our country towards a just and fair Zimbabwe.

We are also worried that with the poor rains and looming threat of drought, vulnerable women and their children are in danger of starvation and malnutrition. We demand that government put in place urgent drought mitigation measures. We are further concerned and disturbed by the lack of transparency and the rampant corruption bedeviling the food aiddistribution exercise in the country. Such practices continue to subject women to endless and unjustified toils in search of food.

We believe as the MDC Women's Assembly, that fundamental changes can only be achieved through a constitution that recognizes and commits to a women's quota, particularly in the legislature where laws are made. We therefore demand on this Women's Day that a quota of the seats in the Lower House be allocated to women. We also demand that a system of Proportional Representation be implemented in the Senate that ensures a 50/50 representation.

We are therefore inviting every God fearing woman to join us on the 8th of May 2012 between 12 and 1pm for individual prayer where we are asking God to speak to our leaders to make them understand that a just and fair Zimbabwe is one that empowers all women.

Happy Women's Day
