A Gweru Provincial Hospital female nurse allegedly collapsed and lost consciousness after reportedly seeing a suspected witch which was sucking blood from a patient in a hospital ward.
Sources close to the occurrence said the nurse was admitted at the institution following the shocking incident.
The incident is said to have occurred on Wednesday night and the affected female nurse has been identified only as Sithole.
Sources who spoke to Chronicle yesterday said the incident has caused furore at the institution with nurses now reported afraid to be on night duty.
"The affected nurse is still admitted in hospital where she is receiving treatment. Fear has now gripped the hospital staff following the incident as most nurses are now afraid to go on night duty," said an official who requested not to be named.
The official said the nurse on admission was conducting her routine checks on patients at around 3 am in the female surgical ward when she came across a suspected witch sucking blood from a patient.
"When she came across the witch, the drip had been removed from the patient. The witch was apparently busy sucking blood from the patient and the on-duty nurse immediately raised an alarm upon witnessing the shocking incident. She (the nurse) suddenly collapsed and fainted," said the source.
The sources said the affected nurse only re-gained consciousness some hours later.
"She is still weak and is being attended to by a doctor. However, she is now able to narrate what really transpired on the fateful day," said the source.
Hospital superintendent, Dr Fabian Mashingaidze dismissed the incident as a mere rumour.
He said the hospital was inundated by calls from people who have relatives admitted at the hospital who also heard the "rumour" which was fast spreading all over Gweru.
"Let me assure the general public that there is no incident of that sort which happened at Gweru Provincial Hospital. It's a fabrication from some people who are fantasising," he said.
Dr Mashingaidze who, however, confirmed that a nurse was admitted at the institution after she collapsed on Wednesday night refused to disclose the nature of her ailment.
"The nurse is being attended to by one of the doctors but her condition and the nature of the aliment is confidential," he said.
Dr Mashingaidze said he requested a report from the night superintendent after receiving the "rumours" of a witch at the institution.
"In the report there was no mention of any incident of that nature and there is no evidence that such a thing occurred," he said.
