Meagre salaries and financial hardships have forced some police officers and their wives to supplement their earnings by selling juice cards.

A survey around Gwanda town, Matabeleland South revealed that most juice card vendors are members of the police force and their spouses some of them within the organisation's ranks.

"We are supposed to be paying school fees at the end of the month and our salaries alone are not enough. We have to sell juice cards to supplement our salaries not only for fees but also for our upkeep," said a policewoman who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The police woman said they would go for day duty and sell juice cards during the night.

"Things are really hard and if we do not do this we wont do anything. There are wives of policemen who are not within the force and those have all day to sell their wares. Some are in the business of selling hand bags and wallets," said the police woman.

"We have to swallow our pride and accept reality otherwise we will starve."

The police force is one of the most corrupt organisations in Zimbabwe, this has been blamed on the meagre salaries earned by civil servants.
