A Gwanda Zapu Youth League member who harassed and insulted a Zanu-PF supporter using vulgar language in public, has been sentenced to six months in prison. Clement Zikhali (30), of 191 Spitzkop North was convicted on his own plea to disorderly conduct in public by Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe.

He was sentenced to six months in prison but three months of the sentence were suspended on condition that he will not within the next five years be convicted of a similar offence.

The prosecutor, Mr Alexander Moyo, told the court that on 30 January this year, Zikhali was drinking beer at Spitzkop North Extension shopping centre with his friend Bhekani Mathwasa.

Both Zikhali and Mathwasa are members of the Zapu Youth League and were putting on their political party T-shirts. At about 3.30pm, the complainant, Ms Siboniso Moyo, arrived at the shopping centre putting on a beret bearing the signature of President Mugabe.

Zikhali and his colleague started denouncing Ms Moyo for putting on the Zanu-PF beret. The two went closer to Ms Moyo and they removed the beret from her head and threw it on the ground.

Zikhali and Mathwasa went on to trample on the beret and in the process Zikhali insulted Ms Moyo in isiNdebele with unprintable words.

Mathwasa then urinated on the beret and went away with it to an unknown destination.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Zikhali's arrest while Mathwasa is still at large and the beret was not recovered.
