A COMMUTER omnibus tout from Gwanda Town has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman who was trying to arrest him for urinating in public.
The incident happened on Monday at about 2.15am.
The tout has been identified as Martin Dube (30) of House Number 142 Senondo Township in Gwanda Town.
Confirming the incident yesterday, Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said two policemen, Constables Admire Munyanyi and Macdilaux Chabayanzara, from Gwanda Police Station were on patrol on Monday.
He said when the two officers arrived near Cry Mantengwane Night Club in Phakama suburb, they saw Dube urinating in public and attempted to arrest him.
"When the two police officers tried to arrest Dube for urinating in public, he ran away and went back inside the night club. The officers followed him inside and when they tried to effect an arrest, Dube resisted and hit one of the police officers," said Insp Ndebele.
He said when the policemen failed to arrest Dube, they left the scene and went to the police station for reinforcements.
"The police officers went back to the night club now being three, and they found that Dube was no longer there. They followed him to his home," said Insp Ndebele.
On arrival at Dube's place, the police officers knocked, but he refused to open the door.
However, he complied after sometime.
"That is when the officers told Dube that he was under arrest for urinating in public and resisting for lawful arrest. He pretended to be understanding and when they had walked about 50 metres on their way to the police station, Dube suddenly had a change of mind.
"He head-butted one of the police officers as he tried to free himself," said Insp Ndebele.
Due to Dube's continued resistance to arrest, the policeman ended up using minimum force as per requirement and finally arrested Dube.
Insp Ndebele said Dube will soon appear in court to answer to charges of resisting lawful arrest and of assaulting a police officer.
"We appeal to members of the public to cooperate with police officers at all times," he said.
