Tsvangirai brings Gweru to a halt

Hordes of people today brought business in the city centre to a halt as they blocked the main street searching for a glimpse of MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, after news filtered around that he was locked in a meeting at a local hotel.
When this reporter arrived at Midlands Hotel where Tsvangirai was meeting with his provincial structures at around 12 midday, about 2, 000 people had blocked all entrances.
The MDC-T security personnel literally failed to control the jostling crowds, with a huge group gathering around Tsvangirai's vehicle, blocking traffic using roads connecting to the hotel.
Other people from tall buildings could be seen watching the drama from their offices.
Jameson Tsuro, the MDC-T Midlands South, spokesperson, said the response of the people to the visit by Tsvangirai showed the popularity of the party and flew in the face of Zanu-PF which controversially won 26 of the 29 constituencies in Midlands province.
MDC-T, however, claimed all the parliamentary and most of the council seats in urban Gweru.
"The people were never invited. They found out on their own that their leader was in the city and are jostling to see him. It shows that we are still popular, despite claims by Zanu-PF that we have lost ground.
"It's going to be unfortunate that Tsvangirai will not address them because he only came for a confidential meeting with the Midlands structures," said Tsuro.
