IN a spine-chilling incident, which left villagers in Bhilingoma area under Chief Gampo in Plumtree shocked, a 41-year-old man allegedly struck his 74-year-old father to death with an axe accusing him of conniving with his mother to bewitch him.

Poland Moyo, after hacking his father Tshabhani Moyo to death, went on to burn his parents' two-bedroom hut before making good his escape.

Circumstances of the grisly murder are that on 1 August at around 7pm, Poland, who was suspecting that his mother was bewitching him, went to his parents' homestead.

It is alleged that upon arrival he confronted his mother Siphi Ncube accusing her of bewitching and planning to kill him.

It is reported that the accusation, which did not go down well with Poland's mother, later degenerated into a commotion prompting Ncube to call her now deceased husband as she felt that it was important for him to hear the malicious accusations labelled against her.

The deceased is alleged to have turned down his wife's invitation saying he would only entertain Poland after he had "appeased" her for labelling her a witch.

This reportedly did not go down well with Poland who quickly went into the kitchen hut where he came back after sometime armed with an axe.

It is alleged that Poland charged at his father before he allegedly struck him several times on the head and all over the body leading to his death.

It is further alleged that while committing the offence he was accusing his father of conniving with his mother to bewitch him.

The heartless Poland, after committing the grisly murder, left Tshabhani's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood before proceeding to set his parents' two- bedroom hut on fire.

The fire reportedly destroyed household property worth thousands of dollars.

Poland, after committing the gruesome murder and arson, disappeared. A manhunt by the police led to his arrest on 4 September.

For the offence, he was brought before Bulawayo magistrate, Sibongile Msipa, charged with murder and arson.

He was, however, not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 22 September.

Poland, who had asked to be granted temporary freedom pending his trial, was advised by the magistrate to apply for bail at the High Court.
