A SOLDIER slit open a colleague's stomach with a broken bottle allegedly because he was jealous of the way his mate kept intimately hugging his girlfriend.
Khumbulani Mhlalelwa, 23, a soldier based in Plumtree, sustained a deep gash measuring about 20 centimetres in his abdomen following the vicious attack by Perfect Ndlovu.
Ndlovu, who is stationed in Masvingo, stabbed Mhlalelwa on November 8 at about 2AM.
The wounded soldier was rushed to Plumtree District Hospital with his intestines protruding following the attack that occurred after a drinking spree at a nightclub in the border town.
His injuries were so serious that he was transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals in Bulawayo.
Mhlalelwa narrated the incident which almost cost his life, soon after being discharged from hospital.
He said he was with his girlfriend and friends at Dumms Palace Nightclub when he was attacked.
Mhlalelwa told The Chronicle some of the events of that day were blurred as he was extremely drunk.
"I can't recall all the things that happened that night because I was very drunk. What I'm really sure of is that I came across Ndlovu at the nightclub and we exchanged a few words but we didn't have any misunderstanding,'' he said.
Mhlalelwa said he spent that night drinking with his friends until they insisted on leaving around 2AM because he was very drunk.
He said he recalls leaving the nightclub while holding his girlfriend, with his friends following behind.
Mhlalelwa said he remembers being stabbed with a sharp object by a man that he met just outside the nightclub.
He said he later regained consciousness at the Plumtree District Hospital with a deep cut on his stomach.
"My companions told me that Ndlovu saw me holding my girlfriend. They said he was incensed that we were hugging in front of him. My friends said Ndlovu insulted us saying if we wanted to have sex we should go to a secluded place,'' said Mhlalelwa.
He said his friends informed him that he started arguing with Ndlovu who got so angry he broke a beer bottle and plunged it into the right side of his stomach.
Mhlalelwa said he was informed that thereafter he fell to the ground unconscious and his friends took him to the hospital.
"It's a miracle that I survived because of the severity of my injuries. The cut was very deep. I was very lucky because the broken bottle did not puncture my intestines,'' said Mhlalelwa.
He said although he was not fully aware of some of the proceedings of that day, he suspected that his assailant was Ndlovu.
Ndlovu was arrested on the day of the incident and is expected to appear in court on December 16.
