TWO MDC-T youths from Bulilima District who allegedly assaulted a 63-year-old Zanu-PF official, appeared in court yesterday.
Brothers Valentine, 18, and Doubt Nkomo, 20, allegedly assaulted the elderly man, Key Dube after he tried to stop them from disturbing a party meeting.
Dube, who is the war veterans ward chairperson for Jutshume area in Bambadzi, was attacked during the ongoing cells' verification exercise being held by the ruling party nationwide.
Valentine and Doubt appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Gideon Ruvetsa facing assault charges.
They were remanded to April 10 for continuation of trial.
The siblings, however, are denying assaulting the elderly man. They alleged he attacked them first forcing them to react in self-defence.
"We did not have any intentions of disturbing any meeting Your Worship. We just happened to be close to the venue of the meeting. The complainant is the one who first attacked us with a pair of handcuffs that he had and we tried to stop him.
"It's also not true that we punched him on the mouth causing him to lose two teeth. He might have lost these teeth somewhere else and he is now laying the blame on us," said Doubt.
Dube, who was adamant that he was attacked by the two youths, said Doubt and Valentine were angered when he disrupted their plan of causing commotion at the Zanu-PF meeting.
He said the two youths arrived in a truck in the company of their two friends and made a lot of noise by continuously revving the engine of their vehicle in a bid to disturb the meeting.
Dube said the youths went on to blow some dust towards the Zanu-PF members gathered for the meeting.
"These two boys assaulted me Your Worship and there are a number of people who can testify to that. I confronted them and asked why they wanted to disrupt our meeting and this angered them.
"As I was leaving they struck me on the mouth and I lost two teeth. They also insulted me saying our party regalia was pathetic. It's not the first time the two caused problems within the community," said Dube.
He said he approached the two youths after realising that they wanted to hit one of the party members after the meeting had adjourned.
Prosecuting, Jane Phiri said Dube was attending a meeting at Jutshume Business Centre on March 26 together with other locals when he was attacked.
She said Doubt and Valentine assaulted the elderly man several times with fists causing him to lose two teeth.
Phiri said the siblings fled the scene but were later arrested.
