Suspected witch caught digging a fresh grave

An elderly woman from Musoro Village in Lower Gweru was allegedly caught red-handed by a bereaved family digging a fresh grave where they had buried one of their relatives. The incident that has sent tongues wagging in the Lower Gweru community occurred last week under headman Lugwalo in Chief Bunina's area.
The elderly woman (name withheld) who is being suspected to be a witch, has since been dragged before Chief Bunina who, however, remanded the matter to Saturday. This, according to witnesses, was after the woman had fingered other villagers to have sent her to exhume the body. Headman Lugwalo and Chief Bunina confirmed the incident yesterday but they both declined to give further details into the matter while insisting that the case was still pending.
"The matter had been brought before Chief Bunina but it will be premature for me to comment on the matter to the media. When the accused woman was initially brought before the chief's court, she confirmed that she was only a messenger who had been sent and the matter has been set for Saturday when all the accused will appear before the Chief," said Headman Lugwalo when contacted for comment yesterday.
Chief Bunina said, "We will be in Gweru tomorrow, I will come together with the accused woman to your office so that she can give her account of what happened, but the matter is yet to be tried before my court."
Witnesses said the elderly woman was caught red-handed digging the grave near Mr Lunga's home by a relative of the dead woman and some villagers who were coming from a beer drink.
"The Lunga family had buried one of their relatives who had died in South Africa on the same day the woman was caught at the grave. They were awakened that night by neighbours one of whom is also a relative who was coming from a beer drink after they found an elderly woman busy digging the grave," said a witness.
