It is an undeniable fact that social media is drastically changing the way people interact from simple socialising and connecting with friends and family to conducting business as well as ways in which news is relayed to the people.
This has overall been highly beneficial to the general public with communication made easy to potentially anyone with the access to the internet.
It is highly commendable that local mobile communications companies have in recent years moved swiftly to harvest this new sector which is rich in potential revenue.
Popular social media platforms include Whats-app, Facebook etc and access to these has been facilitated by means of data packages specific to these social media platforms and as a result increasing proportions of the general public are accessing these platforms via their mobile phones.
It should be noted however that the social media community is rapidly growing and evolving, and also that the youth and their younger brothers and sisters constitute an estimated 72% of the social media users in our country. The youth arguably have a rather adventurous approach in terms of general preferences, social media platforms included.
It is therefore quite astonishing to observe that our local mobile telecommunications companies have failed to identify and make uttermost use of the evolving nature of the social media community which would result in improvements in service to their customers whilst benefiting profitably.
Recent observations suggest that the number of user of platforms such as Twitter and Instagram are rapidly rising, Instagram being of particular interest as users seem to relish the idea of sharing their life stories through pictures and videos rather than ordinary text which is characteristic of the other platforms. It is however saddening to note that companies such as Econet Wireless have not as yet availed data packages specific to these platforms. Such a scenario has has prompted me to take a step further.
Such a scenario has prompted me to take a step further and identify this gap in the market for these companies and hope that they act accordingly to offer better service to the Nation.
