MDC Youth President speaks on arrest and persecution
22 Feb 2019 at 08:42hrs | Views
On Tuesday, 19 February 2019, I was acquitted of any crimes by a Gweru magistrate. I was being tried for frivolous charges of inciting public violence since July 2018.
From the beginning I had maintained my innocence and that charges against me were frivolous and trumped up, meant to demoralize my spirit and the national resolve.
Instead, these charges should be laid against ZEC and it's Chairperson, Priscilla Chigumba who announced fake election results.
Today I welcome my acquittal, but this did not just happen because I am clever or smart. It was because of the moral support from people around me, which kept me going and hopeful. It is the strong support I received from my President Advocate Nelson Chamisa, the MDC Youth Assembly, the Women Assembly and fellow MPS since the beginning of this case. I remain strongly indebted to you all.
I also thank my family members who prayed and fasted for me and who also endured harassment and torture from the junta, for merely being my family. My mother who spend days without eating praying for my safety.
Salutations to the people of my Constituency, Highfield West. The mothers, the fathers and the youths who prayed and supported me during the duration of this trial. I am now back to do the job they send me to do in the parliament of Zimbabwe. To perform and execute my duties without hindrance and threat of abduction or arrest.
My prayers go to all the MDC members and ordinary citizens who are still being tormented by this rogue regime. Those still facing trumped-up charges, a threat of abduction, and those who have been falsely convicted for crimes they have never committed. All those families who lost loved ones because of the barbaric acts of the military regime. I pray for them to remain strong in the face of the continued persecution.
Also, I acknowledge the legal talent, intelligence and bravery of my legal team, who took the regime's case to the dustbin. Advocate Brian Dube and Barrister Jerry Mutongi Bamu
We remain steadfast on the fight for a better Zimbabwe, a Zimbabwe we all subscribe to, and a Zimbabwe with better politics. No amount of arrests, torture, intimidation will deter us from pursuing the people's struggle
