What is Khupe up to?

WEEKEND reports that the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe had claimed the MDC Alliance title exposes confusion in that party. It speaks to desperation on the part of the MDC-T to seek legitimacy. But to what end?

Khupe has been brutal in her assassination of the MDC brand using a questionable judgment. Her duplicitousness in trying to wrest the moniker MDC Alliance confirms that she has someone blowing wind beneath her wings.

The Supreme Court judgment in March was interpreted to give her entitlement to the MDC-T brand.

Since then, she has recalled 21 MDC Alliance Members of Parliament, 84 councillors and is gunning for more.

She has grabbed all party property including the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House, the citadel of opposition politics, with the help of armed soldiers and police.

Abusing the power vested in her by the Supreme Court judgment, Khupe has been on a warpath but the questions many are asking is why is she recklessly engaging in such a conduct to aid a Zanu-PF agenda?

Chamisa's party contested the 2018 elections under the MDC Alliance banner and garnered over two million votes while Khupe, under her MDC-T scored only 45 000 votes.

But now she claims supreme authority over the title MDC Alliance, the MPs and the councillors in a typical case of reaping where one did not sow.

If that's greed, it's shameful and if it is ignorance, it is dangerous.

The common perception is that Zanu-PF is behind the whole opposition chaos so that it claims the urban seats from Chamisa in the December by-elections. The move to claim the MDC Alliance name was advertised by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's spokesperson, George Charamba, on his Twitter handle.

There could be more to this than meets the eye but whatever it is, the electorate, thanks to Khupe and her allies, is the biggest loser.

It is not healthy for a country to be in perennial election mode, losing money and resources in the process where the millions of dollars involved could have been used for important developmental projects.
