As the representative body of the majority of workers in Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is deeply encouraged by the contribution made by the Zanu-PF Hurungwe West Member of Parliament, Temba Mliswa during his maiden speech in Parliament.

In his speech, Mliswa urged the government to revise the indigenisation and empowerment programme so that it benefits more people than few individuals and also called on the politicians not to blame everything on sanctions.

Indeed it has been the ZCTU's contention that the so-called indigenisation programme as it currently obtains, is merely a wealth grabbing exercise by a few elite individuals.

Mliswa also reiterated the ZCTU's call for government to stop importing cars from other countries and instead support our local industries such as the collapsing Willowvale  Mazda Motor Industries in order to create employment.

The ZCTU hails Mliswa's speech as very sobering and one of the few voices of reason in Parliament. The ZCTU has been calling on MPs and Cabinet ministers to buy cars from local manufacturers in order to promote job creation, but it appears our government is interested more in exporting jobs than creating them.

We hope other MPs will join Mliswa in pressurising the government to consider buying local goods.
