Let's resolve Medical Aid Societies and Health Service providers impasse now

29 Aug 2014 at 09:21hrs | Views

The stalemate between Medical Aid Societies and Health Service providers should be resolved expeditiously and amicably. The nation cannot afford the luxury of putting human lives at risk like that.
As I see it, the hike of consultation fees from$20 to $35 was not just, and needs review in order to keep the societies in business as well. Surely the proposal to downgrade medical aid subscribers to seek medical services at clinics and hospitals, as opposed to consulting general medical practitioners, is irrational. Lets imagine the level of over-crowding that we would experience as a nation if we all use these institutions only.

This is a real calamity which is in the brewing pot.  Therefore, we should not allow it to explode while we watch. The two conflicting partners are urged to meet for a dialogue which can break the impasse. We should look at the matter with a sense of responsibility bearing in mind that health matters are a genuine security threat. If we fail to handle this issue, we risky facing an acute health hazard.

Surely there is need to protect the interests of subscribers and their beneficiaries, lest membership to medical aid societies will be rendered useless. Under normal circumstances this conflict should not be allowed any extra minute to rule the situation.

There is need to consider Government health policy which stresses the mandatory need for all citizens to access health facilities without restraint.

In view of such, lets avert artificial hurdles which create superficial problems for us all as a nation. We should avoid being propelled to profiteer out of peoples problems. Health delivery system has an imperative role to save human lives, and everything else comes later. The critical partners on this matter should not be seen operating as if they are poised at sabotaging public interest.
Solution lies in our hands as a nation!
