Let's Fight Traffic Police Corruption

18 Mar 2015 at 10:34hrs | Views

The habit of soliciting bribes from motorists by ZRP traffic Police is quite disturbing. ZRP has commercialized the law enforcement sector illegally against public interest. Surely, all road blocks mounted at almost every road across the country are meant to ensnare motorists who should pay a bribe for all alleged traffic offences leveled against them.

The most affected are commuter omnibus operators who never pass through a road block without paying a price. All said in earnest, transport sector has become a risky investment venture as one is obliged to pump cash into traffic police pockets on a daily basis.

One feature I observed recently in the capital city is that, traffic police along Seke road between Coca-cola and Fly-over take away car keys from Kombi drivers who are forced to park the kombis by the road side during rush hour in the morning. Drivers are forced to hunt down these police officers after the rush hour. That is when they are coerced to pay a token fee for them to retain their keys.

In response to this ill-practice by traffic police, kombi drivers have come up with counter measures where they keep a spare key in their pockets. So whenever such a thing happens, business goes on as they can start the car again and proceed with their trips.

For how long shall we keep this rot in our society? Who will police the police when they have turned themselves into broad day-light criminals who rob the public with impunity on a daily basis? Citizens need adequate civic education so that they can participate actively in nabbing these societal evils and bring them to book to account for their illegal actions.
