HIGHLANDERS Football Club will today parade the Mbada Diamonds Cup at Nkulumane Complex, 14 days after winning the silverware.
The Bulawayo giants brought their seven-year major trophy drought to a halt after beating neighbours How Mine 3-0 to take the $130,000 prize money.
Bosso made history in the tournament by becoming the first out of Harare club to win the competition that was introduced in 2011. Dynamos had won the last two editions. Highlanders' players Njabulo Ncube, Peter "Rio", Moyo and Masimba Mambare wrote their own history by scoring in the final. Former Dynamos striker Roderick Mutuma was the only player to have scored in the last two finals.
Today, Bosso followers are expected to flock to Nkulumane Complex to have a glimpse of the Mbada Diamonds Cup as well as interact with the players who ended the cup drought.
Speaking on his way to Harare from the City of Kings yesterday, Highlanders' vice-chairman Mgcini Mpofu confirmed the trophy parade and urged fans to come in their numbers.
"Old Mutual, the owners of Nkulumane Complex made a request to the club for the Mbada Diamonds Cup to be paraded at the mall on Saturday. The event will start around 10am and will last for about an hour. As you are aware, we are on off-season and some of the players have gone home for holiday and this means that they might not be available for the show.
"This parade is good for the club as we try to build corporate relations as well as have our players interact with the fans who are the people behind the club's success. We hope Highlanders supporters in Nkulumane and other parts of Bulawayo will grace the occasion and make the event one to remember," Mpofu said.
Legendary Highlanders welfare-manager Willard "Mashinkila" Khumalo will lead the team at Nkulumane Complex.
Eccentric goalkeeper Munyaradzi "Dali" Diya, who is attending trials at Golden Arrows in Durban, South Africa, will miss the parade as he is hunting for greener pastures. Captain Innocent Mapuranga, his deputies Erick Mudzingwa and goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda, Mthulisi Maphosa, speed-merchant Gabriel Nyoni, Njabulo "Tshiki" Ncube, Moyo and Bhekimpilo "Bhaka" Ncube are some of the Bosso players expected for the parade.
This is not the first time for Highlanders to parade what they would have won at Nkulumane Complex as they used to do so at the beginning of the millennium when they won four league titles in a row.
Then, Bosso had the likes of skipper Thulani "Biya" Ncube who made history by captaining Highlanders, the National Under-23 and the Warriors at once, Dazzy Kapenya, Zenzo Moyo, Siza Khoza, Gift Lunga (junior) and Bekithemba "Super" Ndlovu who is now the club's assistant coach.
