NCA and ZINASU To Conduct MDC Elections

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has invited the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) to conduct elections at the party's elective congress in Bulawayo which starts Thursday.
The MDC holds its congress at Barbourfields stadium, which is likely to see a heavy contest on senior positions that include the vice president position, secretary general, organising secretary, youth chairperson, women's league chair person and the chairperson post. Tsvangirai will stand unopposed after being nominated by all the party's 12 provinces in the country.
"The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) has been officially invited by the Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai to conduct elections at their congress pencilled for Bulawayo from the 28-30 April 2011.
This is not the first time that the NCA has been requested to conduct the elections for the party. It conducted the MDC 2006 elections at the congress held at the City Sports Centre," the NCA said in a statement.
"The relationship between the NCA and the MDC dates back to the National Working People's Convention in 1999 during the formation of the party.
The NCA together with the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) were key allies during the formation of the party. In essence the alliance played an organic role in giving birth to the labour movement."
"We hope the MDC will emerge a stronger, united and committed movement in the quest for the full democratization of Zimbabwe after this congress. It is our firm belief that violence, factionalism and intolerance will weaken the party ahead of the national plebiscite."
The MDC congress preparations have been disturbed by violent scenes in Bulawayo, which the MDC blames on Zanu (PF) and infiltration from their opponents. The party has invited Kenya's Prime Minister, Raila Odinga to be the guest of honour.
