A new born baby boy is lucky to be alive after being rescued from a pit toilet by villagers.
The baby had been thrown into the pit toilet shortly after its birth.
The new born baby was dumped at Fairfields pit toilets in Chirumhanzu and alert villagers heard its cries in the early hours of Monday morning.
The villagers had to use a crowbar with a wire hook at the end to pull out the baby from the six metre deep pit.
The baby, who was cold and soiled, was cleaned and taken to Mvuma hospital where it was confirmed healthy.
Villagers revealed to ZBC their joy at surviving a life after a nerve racking exercise as the baby nearly slipped back into the pit putting its life in more danger.
Women's affairs district head Mrs Christine Sithole expressed shock and dismay at why someone would go through labour pains only to dump their baby.
Legislator for Chirumhanzu-Zibagwe constituency Auxillia Mnangagwa visited Mvuma hospital where she donated food stuffs and clothing for the baby boy who has since been named Tapiwanashe by the villagers.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the incident and a search for the baby's mother is under way.
