A ZIMBABWEAN disc jockey based in Cape Town, South Africa, Philani "DJ Phitso" Mhlanga, has released a debut gospel album.
DJ Phitso's album is entitled Na Jesu Tinosvika Chete and is compiled with a rhumba music beat.
The disc jockey is in the country to promote his album and take it to radio stations.
He told NewsDay yesterday that he used a rhumba beat as he was inspired by the late musician Tongai Moyo.
"Tongai will always be my mentor. He inspired me so much. I emulate him in all the things that I do, even my style of singing. On stage I also use Tongai's style of doing things, including the way I dress," Phitso, who sings with his eight-member backing group called Gospel Explosion, said.
He said his seven-track debut album will see him dedicating more effort to singing.
"I will quit being a deejay now and concentrate on singing gospel music," he said.
DJ Phitso composes his own songs and stages shows in Cape Town.
He said plans are underway to bring the whole band to Bulawayo at the end of the year to be based in Zimbabwe.
"We want to uplift the music scene in Bulawayo," he said.
He said besides Tongai, he was also inspired by Rebecca Malope as well as Charles Charamba.
"My keyboardist is Bernard Chatukuta who used to play keyboards for Charamba."
In order to reach out to a wider audience, DJ Phitso said he has uploaded his music online. The album was recorded at Praise Lab Studios in Cape Town.
