PRESIDENT Mugabe on Friday donated 15 computers and accessories to Tennyson Hlabangana High School as the Presidential programme to increase ICT knowledge at schools continues.

President Mugabe once taught at the school, situated on the outskirts of Bulawayo. The school is owned by the United Congressional Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA).

President Mugabe handed over the computers to the school's headmaster, Mr Cleophas Buhwa, at the ongoing Zanu-PF 12th National Annual People's Conference in Bulawayo.

The donation comprised 15 computers, the same number of 17-inch HP flat screen monitors, the keyboards and mouse.

There were three laser Jet printers.

The accessories included three USB cables, Microsoft 2010 programmes, print servers, 100 recordable blank DVDs and 15v multi media speakers.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, President Mugabe reaffirmed Government's commitment to assisting schools with the rehabilitation of infrastructure and advancement of ICT programmes.

He urged the school to look after the computers and protect them from damage and theft.

"Please keep the computers in a safe place and ensure that they do not get damaged so that students can benefit from them for a long time to come," said President Mugabe.

He asked Mr Buhwa about the condition of five classroom blocks that he helped the school to construct between 1993 and 1996.

Mr Buhwa told the President that the school needed assistance to build a science laboratory for A-level pupils.

"We also need to construct dormitories for the pupils and build houses for teachers," said Mr Buhwa.

The President said the school's authorities should come up with an estimate of how much was needed to complete the projects and send it to his office through the Governor and Resident Minister of Bulawayo, Ambassador Cain Mathema.

Mr Buhwa thanked the President for the donation, saying the computers would ensure that the school's pupils kept up with modern trends. "This will give our pupils an edge when they leave school and go to look for employment. The school is very grateful for the donation," he said.

President Mugabe has spearheaded the computerisation of schools and has over the years donated hundreds of computers to schools around the country.

Although some schools do not have electricity, the problem has been overcome through provision of solar energy by the Eyes for Learning and Electricity through the Rural Electrification Programme.
