A Harare police officer, Inspector Resistant Ncube caused a stir at a church service in Kuwadzana when he bolted out of the venue of his planned "secret wedding" after spotting his lawfully wedded wife of nine years seated amongst the guests.
On realising that his wife was present, Ncube suddenly pushed aside his best man, who was leading him down the aisle, and sprinted out of the church, much to the bewilderment of the guests.
Inspector Ncube, who is also the editor of the monthly police magazine, The Outpost, was scheduled to wed another police officer, Sergeant Faith Kaseke, who is stationed at Morris Depot in Harare.
While Kaseke broke into tears in the unfolding drama, other guests were simply left speechless.
Sources last week said on April 16, Inspector Ncube's wife, Mercy Ncube (nee Gobvu), got wind of the impending wedding ceremony, which was scheduled for Heritage Hills in Harare.
The ceremony was due to begin in the morning but finally kicked off around 5pm after Inspector Ncube decided to change the venue at the last minute to AFM Kuwadzana Church in a bid to outfox his wife.
Unbeknown to Inspector Ncube, someone was apparently updating his wife on every development resulting in the latter locating the final venue.
It is said that when Inspector Ncube was half way across the aisle, he spotted his wife Mercy among the guests.
He panicked and bolted out of the venue without saying a word.
"He pushed his best man aside and jumped over the chairs as he headed for the door at high speed.
"He jumped into his Mazda MPV vehicle and sped off movie-style," said the source.
The Sunday Mail had sight of the inspector's valid marriage certificate issued under the Marriage Act Chapter 5:11 on November 1 2002.
Mercy last week said her husband's relatives had tipped her off and continued updating her on every development.
"The relatives knew that I had suffered a lot of abuse at the hands of my husband and it hurt them to see me being neglected like that," said Mercy.
She said her husband had left the matrimonial home some time ago on the pretext that he was working out of town.
"I later heard rumours that he had moved in with one of his mistresses," she said.
Inspector Ncube confirmed that his wedding had been foiled, but he refused to comment further, referring all questions to police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri.
