EU say Zimbabwe sanctions to stay

Australia and the European Union yesterday said they will not rush to lift sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe until after a careful study of Sadc's full report on the July 31 harmonised polls.
This followed the release yesterday of the regional bloc's summary of its observer mission report which hails the recent elections in Zimbabwe as "free, peaceful and generally credible."
Presenting the report in Harare yesterday, head of the Sadc observer mission, Tanzanian Foreign Affairs minister Bernard Membe said the elections were free, "generally credible" and "sufficiently represented the will of the people of Zimbabwe", despite some shortcomings.
But the head of the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Aldo Dell'Ariccia, maintained that the sanctions would remain in place until the EU received comprehensive reports.
