MDC-N condemns the arrest of journalists

The Movement for Democratic Change condemns in strongest terms the arrest of The Standard reporter Patience Nyangowe and Editor Nevanji Madanhire by the police yesterday.
We wish to point that any arrest and detention of journalists while carrying out their duties reminds us of the fascist times where the enemies of truth and angels of darkness proffered all ways to disturb the flow of information. The party believes that there could have been ways that the police may have expressed their displeasure through reporting to the Voluntary Media Council , the Zimbabwe Media Commission or possibly they may have approached the courts for redress as the law on defamation dictates without arresting the media practitioners.
We take these arrests with the seriousness they deserve and we have instructed our representative in government to make sure that there is speedy implementation of the media reforms to enable the better working environment for media practitioners.
As a party we wish to reassure Zimbabweans and the world of our undiluted commitment to the creation of a just and a fair Zimbabwe where media freedom will be respected and the obstruction of flow of information will be unknown.
