The opposition MDC has invited officials from the camp led by ex-vice president Joice Mujuru to cross the floor and join hands with Morgan Tsvangirai in a grand coalition to defeat President Robert Mugabe in 2018.

Addressing thousands of party supporters in Kuwadzana yesterday, MDC national executive member Nelson Chamisa said it was refreshing that former Zanu-PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa now agreed with them on the ruling party's deficiencies.

He said Zanu-PF had become a haven of factions and urged disgruntled members to join the MDC.

Chamisa also called upon his fellow comrades Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti who broke away to come back on board.

"We call upon people like Mujuru, Mutasa and all other democratic forces to come and join Tsvangirai. I even told Mutasa come, come, come and unite with us as Zimbabweans to extricate the country from the economic mess that it finds itself in," said Chamisa.

The Kuwadzana East legislator said all democratic forces must take advantage of Tsvangirai's grassroot support and coalesce around him if they entertained hopes of dislodging Zanu-PF from power.

Chamisa said: "I told Biti that in a desert, it is better to be a rat than an elephant. We cannot have people with just an island of support.  You must swallow your pride and join those with an ocean".

He also dismissed reports that he intended to form his own party or join Biti's breakaway faction saying he did not believe in rebellion.

"We have done our congress and it's over. Whether you are happy or not, what is important is that we had objectives when we formed this party. It was never about positions, never about becoming secretary-general or any other post but to build the nation.

"I have told Mutasa to join us, I call upon Biti and Ncube to forget about leading because I have never believed that one can be successful by rebelling against leadership. We formed the MDC and we cannot form another party. I also want Simba Makoni to come on board," he said before breaking into a Tsvangirai praise-singing hymn — "Iko kuseri kwaTsvangirai ndiko kune midzimu yedu (Our hope lies in Tsvangirai).

Chamisa said the country's politics had been poisoned by a penchant to focus on power scheming and pushing others out of power at the expense of service delivery to the people.

He slammed Zanu-PF for grabbing everything for themselves saying the "culture of entitlement on the basis of political affiliation must be terminated".

The meeting was attended by several MDC national executive members, MPs including former deputy secretary-general Tapiwa Mashakada, Mkoba MP Amos Chibaya among others.

Provincial executive members from Harare and across the country including James Gumbi, Masvingo provincial chairman and Jabulani Mtunzi, who is youth chairman, Chitungwiza province also attended.
