Parliamentarians have concurred that the current spate of retrenchments is not good for citizens.
Contributing to the debate on the recently presented Mid-Term Fiscal Policy Statement by Finance Minister, Patrick Chinamasa, legislators argued that retrenching workers as is currently happening is not the best way of approaching challenges faced by both government and the private sector.
"We can't have a situation where companies lay-off workers as what is currently happening," said Joseph Chinotimba.
Cde Munyaradzi Kareke and Mr James Maridadi also condemned the unfolding events, saying failure to amend the law allowing employees to be laid off on three month's notice and without retrenchment packages will lead to increased household poverty.
Meanwhile, the legislators also argued that government's focus should be on growing the economy through strategies such as Special Economic Zones, bankrolling agriculture, mining and all other productive sectors of the economy.
Parliament resumed on Tuesday to debate the Mid-Term Fiscal Policy Statement.
Key areas under focus are agriculture, industry, mining and the reduction of government expenditure while seeking to grow revenue.
